disorienting music
RELEASED APRIL-DECEMBER 2024
I dedicated the entire year of 2024 to an experiment involving the use of collage language in music. On one hand, the idea was aesthetic, but on the other hand, I wanted it to carry a message of a social, and perhaps even philosophical, nature.
Disorienting music is a response to times of disorientation and chaos. It's an attempt to sound out how we perceive reality today. Maybe even a contestation?
Imagine a typical situation where you sit down and scroll through social media for 5 minutes. During this time, you learn about a war in some part of the world, a friend's vacation, and an exhibition at a nearby art gallery. You watch 3 memes and 5 GIFs. Sensational headlines inform you about cooking recipes, a fine for bad parking, genocide, a celebrity alcohol scandal, and new fees for streaming platforms. Another memes - five with cats, and two more about the climate crisis. Whether we like it or not, this is how we currently receive information about the world. And this is exactly what I want to tell through the idea of disorienting music.
In the visual world, the collage technique with its chaotic and colorful aesthetic is present and widely understood. In literature, it was popularized by William Burroughs. In music, using collage is not obvious, although it also has its great examples, such as in the discography of Frank Zappa. I decided to explore similar tools but in a different style and in a slightly different way.
'The Neon Fruit Supermarket' is inspired by Allen Ginsberg's poem 'A supermarket in California'. It was released in January 2024 as an NFT. More about this composition and its accompanying visual work can be read here: www.sound.xyz/cutupbanana/the-neon-fruit-supermarket
'Chasing Shadows' is an extended version of a track originally composed as a soundtrack for an audiovisual work—a collaboration between Von Doyle and me. The short version was released as an NFT in March 2024. You can watch the visual and read more about the background behind it here: objkt.com/tokens/KT1WHcRotT5cfMrn9HFa1xyAitNhAopE7PS2/2
The loops that make up 'THERE' were previously released as a live improv take on my YouTube. This exact remastered recording is available as a bonus track.
The loops were also used as the soundtrack for the audiovisual NFT "Bathroom Talk" - a collaboration between myself, Ana Maria Caballero and Adam Disbrow that was released in 2022.
Fun fact - every sound in "THERE" is a prepared acoustic guitar.
